Grandmaster John L. Godwin
Leading Martial Arts in the 21st Century
Growing up in a tough area in Southern, New Jersey, John was subject to the downfalls of the area where most youths were either in a gang or part of the party culture of the time. After a chance encounter with a gang in Camden, New Jersey, Godwin was left badly beaten with multiple injuries. He had two choices; succumb to the destructive path he was heading down or to turn adversity to advantage and fight for a better life. Within days Godwin enrolled in Yi’s karate institute and began his Tang Soo Do and Hapkido studies under Grandmaster Ki Yun Yi. It would become a defining moment in his life. With hard work and dedication, a special master/student relationship developed between the two of them. Grandmaster Yi gave him the finest instruction in leadership and teaching skills. It was as a result of this relationship that Master Godwin was introduced to someone very special, Grandmaster Jae C. Shin, founder of World Tang Soo Do Association.
It was at a tournament that Grandmaster Shin first saw Grandmaster Yi’s student, and soon after asked Godwin to work at Shin Karate. That was in 1984. “It was quite an honor to be asked to serve as the instructor at headquarters.”
While working at Headquarters, Godwin was encouraged by Grandmaster Shin to study other martial arts to broaden his understanding. He has practiced and competed in kickboxing under the instruction of Chief Master Steven Chambliss. He also intensified his study of Hapkido, where he is currently a 9th Dahn Grandmaster Instructor under the tutelage of DoJuNim (founder) Ji Han Jae. With whom he has personally trained with in over 300 private seminars.
John Godwin was inducted into the Official Tae Kwon Do Hall of Fame as Outstanding Pioneer Tang Soo Do Player for the USA. He currently has a 7th Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do. He became a World Champion in fighting, forms, weapons, and demo team competitions at the World Tang Soo Do Championships in 1986, 1988, and 1990. In 1999 he won 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal at the Hapkido World Championships in Korea. He now dedicates his time to training future leaders with his instructor training and leadership program.
The trainer of Champions, producing numerous regional, national, and world champions; Grandmaster John Godwin has 1,500 active students at the Korean Martial Arts Institute. Known worldwide as a “21st Century Warrior”, Grandmaster Godwin is also known by his friends and students as a true family man. He enjoys teaching kids the lessons he has learned through the years. He has five children with his eldest son John Jr, a 3th Degree Black belt in Tang Soo Do and 4rd Degree Black Belt in Hapkido, currently an instructor at the Newark studio.
